After careful consideration and deliberation, The Virgil Thomson Foundation has officially dissolved. This decision comes after a long period of thoughtful sunsetting of the organization's operations and mission.

For over 40 years, the Virgil Thomson Foundation has been dedicated to the support of contemporary music and the preservation of Virgil Thomson’s legacy. The Foundation has funded many performances, recordings, and other activities in Thomson’s work and other American music. Two of the Foundation’s enduring legacies are the Virgil Thomson Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, given biennially to a composer for an exceptional American composer of vocal works, and the ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Awards for outstanding print, broadcast, liner notes and new media coverage of music.

In keeping with the friendly and collegial relations between Virgil Thomson and Aaron Copland during their lifetimes, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Inc. has assumed management of virgilthomson.org and other activities as successor to the Virgil Thomson Foundation, Ltd. For any questions regarding the Foundation's dissolution, please contact info@virgilthomson.org.

The former Board of Directors extend our deepest gratitude to the Foundation’s staff, artistic collaborators, and past grantees, who have been instrumental in our success.
